Catholic Education Week St Joseph's Bundaberg
As part of the celebrations of Catholic Education Week, students of any age were given the opportunity to enter into the scarecrow building competition. It cost the students 42 to enter and the proceeds went towards buying materials for their new gardens - seeds etc. all the scarecrows were going to be built at school and the winning entry received the honour of protecting the vegetable gardens. Below can be seen just a few of the entries.
After each break children collect compostable material from lunch boxes etc for use in the worm farm and composter seen below.

Milbi - The Pet Turtle
Milbi is a freshwater Eastern Shortneck Turtle donated to the children by the school's aboriginal elder, Uncle Cliff. Milbi was hatched in June 2010 and is obviously well cared for by a group of children from years 4 - 7. This group looks after Milbi every day by feeding her blood worms and turtle sticks, cleaning her tank and filter and by taking her to the school oval each day for her 15 minutes of sun. the students make little obstacles for her to climb over to give her even more exercise. below Milbi can be seen walking on the Library floor and swimming in her tank. Milbi even gets to spend her holidays with families from the schools.

Here is Julia, a student at St Joseph's Bundaberg who has recently, selflessly cut her pony tail off so she can donate this hair towards making wigs for cancer sufferers. Julia is shown here proudly holding her pony tail. Julia says the hair needs to be at least 30 cm long before you can donate it and it takes at least 12 of these to produce one wig. Congratulations Julia this is a wonderful example for all of us.
For a number of years now, the staff and students of St Joseph's Bundaberg have worked very closely with Mon Repos Conservation Park. Mon Repos is a well known turtle rookery 14 km east of Bundaberg. The students travel to the park to clean up and weed the turtle rookery where all the eggs are placed. They also go to the rocks and study the marine life. At Mon Repos there is a centre where visitors can look at the turtles and the activities that take place in the park. Chelsea, a student at St Joseph's is a full Turtle Ranger working at Oaks Beach. She explained that the year three, in particular, are taken to Mon Repos about three times a year. The students also help the turtles by running a "Cut the Glow" campaign each year. When hatchlings emerge their immediate instinct is to head straight to the ocean but the glow from nearby townships confuses them and they can easily change direction. The students help to educate the general public on this issue and encourage people to turn off lights during the hatching season. Below you can see some of the activities that the children take part in at Mon Repos. the final picture shows some students with their "Cut the Glow" campaign.
